Greetings from San Francisco! Our next annual business meeting and social
hour are less than two months from now. They will be held immediately following
the 3rd Educational Conference To Develop The Curriculum In
Temporomandibular Disorders And Orofacial Pain. The conference will be held
at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Washington DC, on Wednesday, April 5, 2000. Details
about the conference and an application form can be found on our WEB SITE
(the website you are currently on) http://itsa.ucsf.edu/~oplesh/autopp or by
clicking on: http://itsa.ucsf.edu/~oplesh/autopp April
3rd 2000 AUTOPP Conference Agenda. We urge everybody to
register soon if they have not done so yet, as the registration fee increases
after March 5, 2000. As you may have already discovered, this year, for the
first time, there is a registration fee ($125) for AUTOPP members to attend the
conference. We regret that the meeting, like our other activities, could not be
included in your yearly dues. However, money from the registration fees will be
used entirely to pay back a loan advanced by the American Academy of Orofacial
Pain in order to simply host the conference. This conference is a non-profit
joint venture with several organizations participating. All speakers and
organizers are volunteering their many efforts, so we hope to see as many of our
members as possible!
Immediately after the meeting, AUTOPP will hold its annual business meeting
and social hour. Because of the way in which registration is being conducted for
the Educational Conference, we are not sure how many AUTOPP members will be
attending, and we need a head count so we can order food and drink for the
social hour. We would like you to contact Octavia Plesh at Voice tel number:
415-476-5881; FAX:415-476-0858 or email at: oplesh@itsa.ucsf.edu, and let me
know that you will be attending. Further, we really need to receive that
confirmation by March 9, 2000, 5pm PST. If you are not able to contact us by
then but plan on attending the business meeting and social hour, remember that
you will be borrowing someone else’s food! Ouch!! We hope to have a good turnout
for the business meeting this year as there are some important topics we would
like to explore, topics that relate to the future of our organization. See the
Meeting Agenda for more details.
Our current President, Ernie Glass, will not be able to attend the AUTOPP
meeting this year due to his recent transition from academia in Kansas City to
private practice in Seattle. Our President-elect, Richard Ohrbach, will also not
be able to attend as his wife is expecting at the time of our meeting. Dr.
Norman Mohl, a past-President of AUTOPP, will be our Acting Temporary President
for this next business meeting.

DIRECTIONS FOR AUTOPP
Richard Ohrbach has polled the past and current officers of AUTOPP regarding
the historical purpose and anticipating plans for the organization. That
question emerged out of several conversations among current and past officers,
with general recognition and agreement that the focus for the organization has
become somewhat less clear in the past few years. Several of the polled members
have responded, but Richard is in hopes that all will do so in sufficient time
that the responses can be integrated into a statement or description for the
membership at the meeting. We want to devote part of the meeting to a discussion
about what current members see as the purpose of our organization and what
directions the current and next immediate officers should work towards.
We want to ask all members to consider the following questions:
(1) What do you regard as the purpose of AUTOPP?
(2) What did you think this organization did (or should be doing) when
you joined, whether that was remote or recent?
(3) What challenges do you face in your daily work in teaching,
service, or administration, with respect to TMD and orofacial pain, that
this organization could perhaps address?
(4) What future changes should be considered for this
organization.
In sum, we want to ask
our current members to share their views of what they might want or need from
membership in AUTOPP.

Message From the President
Hello fellow AUTOPP members. Last year we voted to do
a follow-up all day educational session to hopefully bring completeness to the
project on Orofacial Pain hosted by Dr. Giles Lavigne. Dr. Norm Mohl and
associates have planned a very informative workshop for all attendees at the
Grand Hyatt. I hope many of you will be in attendance for this event.
This year has brought many changes for me. I have moved out
of the University setting and into a private Oral Medicine practice. I have also
moved from Kansas City, Missouri to the Seattle, Washington area. All of this
has happened in the past two months, and although it has been very hectic, I
know this is the direction to move for me. For this reason I will not be in
attendance at this year’s meeting. Our VP Richard Ohrbach will also be
unable to
attend the meeting. That leaves Octavia Plesh with the burden of running the
business meeting. She has graciously agreed to do so. However, over the course
of the year a discussion has arisen between Richard and myself about the role
and direction of the AUTOPP group. We are not sure what it is. It appears that
the all day educational meeting originally designed by AUTOPP members has been
absorbed by AAOP. Perhaps that is because most AUTOPP members are also in AAOP.
I think the basic question that needs to be discussed at the business meeting is
"What are the future goals and directions of AUTOPP? Does it need to exist? If
so, for what purpose?"
Along the lines of the business meeting, we have no idea how
many will be in attendance. The question arises about a social hour after the
business meeting. Do we have one or just have the business meeting and allow
folks to go to dinner, etc. after the meeting? I think the best way to make a
decision will be to ask those of you who will be in attendance for the AUTOPP
business meeting to inform Octavia no later than 10 days after receipt of this
newsletter. We need a head count to evaluate which way to proceed. I thank you
in advance for your help.
My best wishes to all of you,
Ernie Glass,President,
AUTOPP

Several of you inquired about the manner dues are paid. Here is the
Treasurer's response.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE TREASURER
Regarding Dues. Members must pay their dues by check (of any type:
personal or corporate) and then get reimbursed by their institution with the
canceled check. We lose money if we process your dues payment through any other
mechanism, simply because there is so little money involved in the dues. If we
were to provide every member with the opportunity to pay through their
institution (e.g., purchase order) then it would cost us more than we could
recover. It is that simple. Please send your dues to: Francis M. Bush,
Treasurer, AUTOPP, P.O. Box 566 MCV Station, Virginia Commonwealth University
School of Dentistry, Richmond, Va 23298. If you are unsure how much you owe,
contact Francis at: fbush@den1.den.vcu.edu
