Conference Perspective

History of First and Second Conferences

In 1990 the First Educational Conference to Develop the Curriculum in Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain featured presentations on a proposed curriculum model for predoctoral education, existing models of postdoctoral TMD and orofacial pain programs, existing models of continuing education curricula, and workshops involving all registrants.  A significant outcome of the first conference were curriculum guidelines suggested for the study of TMD and orofacial for predoctoral, postdoctoral, and continuing education programs.  A review of the suggested guidelines by the American Association of Dental Schools (AADS) resulted in their formal  adoption by the AADS and publication in the Journal of Dental Education in 1992.

The second conference was conducted in 1992.  The goal of the second conference was to discuss the educational methodologies for the implementation of the formal curriculum guidelines in the dental education curriculum.  Presentations featured problem-based learning, decision analysis, and computer technology.  Workshops included hands-on experience with PBL and various interactive computer TMD and orofacial pain programs.

Goals of Third Conference

The goals of the third conference are the following: 1) to provide information regarding the current status of the predoctoral and postdoctoral teaching of TMD and orofacial pain, 2) to emphasize further integration of the teaching of basic sciences in the curriculum as they relate to TMD and orofacial pain, and 3) to conduct a workshop based on the new accreditation standards relative to how TMD and orofacial pain should be taught in the predoctoral program so that every Abeginning dentist@ as described by the revised CDA=s accreditation standards can decide what aspects of orofacial pain he/she can treat independently and what should be referred.

PROGRAM DESIGN AND PROCEEDINGS

The conference will be co-chaired by Drs. Ron Attanasio and Norman Mohl, both of whom served as co-chairpersons for the first two conferences.

A morning plenary session presentation on the current status of curricula in TMD and orofacial pain will be based upon a survey conducted of North American dental schools.

A morning plenary session presentation on the current status of existing postdoctoral orofacial pain residency programs will be based upon years of first-hand knowledge and experience of directing programs and conducting site visits of other established programs in the United States.

A morning plenary session presentation will emphasize the importance of further integration of basic sciences into the study of TMD and orofacial pain.

A morning plenary session Reactors Panel to the predoctoral, postdoctoral, and basic science presentations will be comprised of the speakers and others noted in the field of TMD and orofacial pain education.  The focus will be to provide commentary on the content of the presentations as well as to provide answers to questions from the conference registrants.

Poster presentations and educational exhibits featuring current curricular models and pedagogy related to the study of TMD and orofacial pain will be available for review by conference   registrants.

Two morning and afternoon workshops will focus on the predoctoral and postdoctoral TMD and orofacial pain curricula, respectively.  Conference registrants will be invited to participate in either one of their choice.

An afternoon plenary session Reactors Panel to the workshops will be comprised of the workshop co-moderators as well as others.

REGISTRATION AND CREDIT

The registration for this conference is $125 in advance and $150 on-site for educators and $50 for students, which includes registration, coffee breaks, handout materials, and inclusion in the development and review of post-conference proceedings that will represent the consensus of the workshop.

The AAOP certifies that this continuing education offering is acceptable by the Academy of General Dentistry for 8 credit hours and the credit applicable toward AGD membership requirements, Fellowship or Mastership, provided the course is completed as designed.
